During holidays and other special times, as you prepare for family get-togethers and celebrations, be sure to involve the elders in your life. Holidays especially can be a difficult time for many older people, who may experience feelings of depression, loneliness, and confusion. How can you make sure that the seniors that you care about have an enjoyable celebrations? Plan ahead and review these tips.
Create a senior-friendly environment. If you plan on taking your loved one to celebrate at another person’s home, then be aware that this environment needs to be a safe one for the senior. For instance, remove accent rugs that could lead to a fall.
Plan ahead. Get them involved. Help the senior to select gifts for family members, and involve them in wrapping presents.
Ask them to share their memories of holidays gone by with you and the rest of the family. This will help them to feel connected and truly a part of the holiday season.
Encourage them to give. Increase their self worth by giving of themselves or providing gifts for others. Sharing their memories or cherished keepsakes with people close to them may provide a true joy.
Monitor medications and alcohol. Be aware of your senior’s alcohol intake at gatherings or in the privacy of their own home. You don’t want the alcohol to interfere with medications that they are already taking.
Keep the atmosphere positive and festive, and remember that the holidays are all about family and togetherness. Even if the seniors in your life may feel depressed or lonely, by reaching out to them and including them in the festivities, you can make it more joyous holiday season for everyone.
Give the gift a senior most wants! Time, companionship and visits from their friends and loved ones will be their most treasured gift. Seniors will typically relish the social gatherings. This is the time to have patience, have compassion, and provide a safe and wonderful new memory, for them to reflect back on throughout the coming year.
