Blur your vision, put un-popped popcorn kernels in your shoes… now try to do your daily chores, or take a walk, or try going shopping at the market. Making adaptations for our seniors is all it takes to compensate for their physical declines. The shrinking 5 foot woman can no longer reach the products on the upper shelves. Perhaps she is in a scooter because of her limited mobility… Are the products mostly on eye level within reach for her? Savvy retailers are preparing for the burgeoning population of adults who will surpass age 65. By 2030 20% of the U.S. population will be seniors, age 65+, representing 71.5 million people. I too will be in that group and will be 74!
Growing awareness by stores that are stepping up their preparations for senior friendly environments are to be commended! Retailers compensating for physical limitations of our elderly will increase sales. Baby Boomers start turning 65 in 2011 and are expected to continue to be strong consumers.
Accommodations start in the parking lot, with wider spaces close to the entrance. The smaller stores that are easier to navigate are preferred. Larger print on labels, and carefully selecting coloring and packaging are measures to be taken. Combating the effects of Macular Degeneration and Making it easier for our elderly population, at the same time benefits all others. So put yourself in “grandma’s shoes”… then re-design your store. Is it that much to ask? Your aging mother, father and revered elderly will thank you.
